SMS length and credits
Why some texts cost more than one credit.
An SMS is sold in segments, and one credit pays for one segment.
- One segment holds up to 160 standard characters.
- Longer messages are split into segments of 153 characters, and each segment costs a credit.
- Special characters such as curly quotes, accented letters or emoji switch the message to a different format, where a segment holds only 70 characters.
The message editor shows the character count, the number of segments and the credits used as you type. The short line at the end of an SMS is counted too.
To save credits, keep texts short and use plain characters. For longer updates, use email.
